Although the book was an okay and light read, there are a few constructive criticisms that I have:Firstly, it was told in a rather of fact manner, and didn't flow very well; it was stoic at times It did, however, improve more towards the latter part of the story.
Secondly, there was absolutely zero chemistry between the main protagonists. Their first kiss was out of character and place seeing as we are told that Courtney couldn't stand Darien, and had ensured that she never spoke to her. So that kiss definitely came from left field for me.
Thirdly, because of points one and two, the author could have developed the characters and story a lot more. I was surprised that I'd read this book in 2 hours!
Lastly, the book ended abruptly. It would have been nice to have had a little more by having the story include Courtney's move to California and to have shown more of their new budding love for one another.

Second Chance Sydney Canyon 9780996242929 Books Reviews
Oh wow...I loved this book! Sydney Canyon is an amazing author who captures the human experience well. The plot of Second Chance begins in tragedy and ends in hope, with a brilliantly gripping journey along the way. I fell in love with the characters and quickly became utterly absorbed by the story line until it get to the point where I couldn't put it down! 5 stars easily earned.
Second Chance was an extremely well written story that gave the reader an emotional glimpse into a soldier's world. The author skillfully delivered the trauma of war to the readers doorstep with the opening scene and never let up. The main characters were well developed, believable, and likable. The secondary characters were well developed as well, and their presence added a healing dimension to the story. The romance was tender and the reader couldn't help but root for the couple to be together. The plot was solid and pacing was good. Congrats to the author on an outstanding work that is, in and of itself, a tribute to our military.
Second Chance was a moving novel covering a range of topics - war, injury, death, despair, love, happiness and the list goes on...
I was drawn into Darien's story of survival and Courtney's heartache; I was grateful to witness their chance at happiness together.
Having said that, I felt the story was a little rushed, especially the ending. I would've liked to see a little more of Darien and Courtney's relationship building and how it all played out.
All in all, a great first 'novel' by Sydney Canyon (upgrading from her usual novellas) ☺
I was torn rating this book. 4 stars? 5 stars? I really wish there were half stars!
Therefore, I'm going with 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars)
This book was like a really bad ripoff of The Lucky One, except change the life saving picture for new eyeballs. I'm guessing no one edited it did the whole beta reading thing for the author because of typos like, "I'm sorry it took me song long to realize..." and the fact that the author thinks "near sided" is a thing. It's nearsighted. I also really liked it when Jason eyed her with a "snare." So what was needed with this book is all too common in the genre... an editor, beta readers, and perhaps some creative writing and english courses. I mean they're charging 9.99 for this and the writing is just horrible. And this is reviewing on a curve. The plot is simplistic. The character development is non-existant at times. Like Jason. He's a one demential character that is just a jerk, who for some reason thinks his sister's wife is his even though the book never explains the reasoning behind this, just a couple of sentences about how he's acted like that since his father died. Does that mean he was like this when his sister was alive? And then all of a sudden he's okay with everything at the end? If I didn't love my kindle so much, I'd have thrown it across the room. I'm not even sure why I kept reading it.
This book had a great story line. I couldn't put it down. The struggles and triumphs were realistic along with the story of falling in love. Great red.
I enjoyed this book and it pays tribute to our Military personnel.
I enjoyed the read. A book can never make you fully understand what really happens in war. But, reading a story can help you get a taste of what our men & women have to deal with. Ms. Cannon is trying to bring to you a glimpse, if you will. Darien has suffered from the loss of most of her team from a mistake made by another soldier & a career ending injury. She doesn't know what to do with herself, being a Marine (ooh rah!) was her life. Blind. What a blow. Then a miracle of sight has been given back to her by the loss of another. She has a driving need to thank the family for giving her life back to her. She travels across the country to do so, unannounced. But, something changes. Darian stays on the family's farm. She is plagued by PTSD, there are triggers that seem to blindside her. In comes Courtney, feisty, controlling & she doesn't like Darien, sort of. But there is something about Darien that is startling & beautiful. Jason, brother in-law to Courtney, is on the fringes of the story but causes some trouble. His mother, Beverly, tries to keep him off that part of the farm.
I gave this book 5 stars because it tugs at my heart. I can relate, somewhat, to her PTSD as I suffer with the same. Yes, there are typo's but it didn't take away from the book. It gives you insight, if just a little, with what a soldier deals with.
